Professor: Impact of sequestration will be felt locally, eventually

While across the board federal budget cuts have now taken effect, a local expert says the Mohawk Valley will eventually feel the effects.

However, Utica College Political Science Professor Luke Perry says it will take time for the cuts to be felt locally.

Perry believes that if citizens are worried, they should get more involved by better informing themselves, and encouraging their government leaders to come to an agreement.

"I think if you feel failed as a citizen, now is the time to learn more," Perry said. "Contact your representative, push for a compromise or what other action moving forward you think would be best."

Last week, Congressman Richard Hanna said there would be no job cuts to DFAS in Rome, only furloughs. Those furloughs would be one day a week for 22 weeks starting in April.
