FacultyRow Director left a comment for Gavin Pereira
FacultyRow Director said… This weekend people were told by the Chinese government to stay indoors due to air pollution. This included Beijing and other parts of northern China. Gavin Pereira, an expert in air pollution, at Yale University comments on the severity of China's air pollution problem:
At these levels, which exceed the range of the air quality index, there is little doubt that air pollution will have a public health impact. There is an urgent need for better control of industrial and traffic emissions, so that the only response is not merely to create a new air quality index that can accommodate such harmful levels.
We know that fine particulate air pollution affects not only respiratory health but also the cardiovascular system. The less well-understood or unknown consequences, such as pregnancy outcomes and cognitive function, are perhaps even more worrying.
